What happened?

Hello.

In late 2011 I left Skulltag to go do other stuff. I was looking forward to get back into Doom multiplayer and decided to return today. But to be honest I am pretty confused about what happened to ST. Is it dead? What is this Zandronum? If it isn't dead, what's that "It Ends" article on the ST website all about? If it is dead, why are there lots of active servers when I downloaded Skulltag again and opened Doomseeker?

Thanks,

Rexelend

ST died, Zandronum is the new fork.
Use 98d from skulltag until Zandronum is released

Zandronum has all the same staff from Skulltag, except for Carnevil.

That is a relief. I was about to sit at my desk all depressed thinking about the great times I had on ST and Doom. Lol. I don't have to do that now.

I haven't counted Carnbarn as staff in years.

Yeah, I don't know why people keep mentioning this as a "selling point" for Zandronum.
He moved on to another project years ago.

What? That's the whole reason Zandronum exists!

Doesn't mean he did it any good.
Maybe someone else would have made a better port with a better community if he hadn't been doing Skulltag.
Besides Torr is awesome and does good stuff with code.

I think a good way of expressing the situation is that technically, Zandronum is a fork of Skulltag and a "continuation", though practically it's a rename and a reskin.

Just as someone else would have made a better port with an even better comunity than zandronum have. Great argument.

I don't know how all this time I never gave a f... flat to what happened in forums, except for looking up neat releases. Skulltag/Zandronum is always there, working as it should. Really, this is not important to discuss anymore.

basically, zandronum is skulltag minus skulltag_data.pk3 and plus a few cherry-picked features
which you people should really stop suggesting - wouldn't it be more beneficial to get the codebase ready for backporting EVERYTHING, hmm hmm? if that happens, you'll all get your features, and then some
it might take a while longer, but that's what happens when your codebase is a good two YEARS behind

I didn't seem to know what happened either. I came back and see that the Skulltag forums are closed. a few months later and still closed. I had to do some research of who the Creator of the engine is and I find out that he left Skulltag. Skulltag was great while I knew it. Then I hear about this website and came over here where the engine is now called Zandronum. Good to see it's back... somewhat.

Pretty much this, so far I'm able to do the same things with Zandronum that I could do with Skulltag - Watch bots confuse themselves trying to navigate my maps while I blast them to bits. Only problem is that I can't play online without accumulating an expensive internet bill, so I haven't tried a real net game. Otherwise Zandronum is satisfactory for my general Doom needs, and as Zandronum gets bigger and better I may have an internet connection I can play on again and I'll be able to kick some ass.

Also the cool space background should be made into a skybox.
