Like I said on IRC, since we couldn't find any perfect enough name, even with the help of altdeath/wtf, I propose leaving this for community discussion. Let the players themselves submit ideas here and have Torr Samaho choose.

Yeah I think letting people unleash their imagination is a great move.

It would be much more organized if these discussion could be held on a forum, perhaps this one. Along with the port name, it may be equally important to also be able to discuss other ideas for the port such as the theme, on the forum.

You can ask the community if you want. My personal experience though is that the community is really uncreative when it comes to naming (I believe I asked them to name Doomseeker and didn't really get anything. IIRC they never could wrap their heads around the fact that I didn't want a name with "Skulltag" in it.). Maybe people will think more about a name for Skulltag, but my guess is you're just going to get a bunch of people telling you to call it "Skulltag."

A name really isn't as important as you all try to make it out to be. People will really only care for about a week and then it will grow on them, whatever it may be. Just think about the Wii. Worst name for a console ever and yet I no longer see anyone insisting on calling it the Nintendo Revolution.

Personally I vote for calling it Altdeath.

Hmm, but then we also support other IDTech1 games, not just Doom.

There was an issue of it being a kick in the face for Carnevil considering what happened the last time we touched ground with him. I like the name in itself, but others don't.

In any case, going completely against the other thread I posted in Off-topic and deciding to think on 6 hours of sleep, I came up with the name "Gavil".
It's a intentional play on the Mongolian pronunciation of the word "гавал" (pronounced "gaval" in English, the Mongol word for "skull"). It'd also bring us a wicked hammer logo too since the English pronunciation is in association with a gavel hammer.
Domaintyper shows that only the .com name for this is actually taken, and it's unused for any real project so we won't have any fear of overlapping trademarks.

If we use this, I'd probably suggest http://www.gavil.net/ as it isn't even taken by anything at all.
But then .com outdoes .net

That means such a name doesn't fit IMO as name for a doom port. Also AltDeath is well known in the community as a bad place, full of drama (AltDrama) and stuff. I'm fully agreed on what Dynamo and K6 say here:

I like Gavil so far. AltDeath is a good name for a multiplayer Doom port, but it does have a negative connotation now.

Me and AlexMax really like the name Infernum (which is Latin for hell), the domain could be something like infernum-doom.com or infernum-online or whatever. Even torr said that it wasn't bad.
