Aligning 3d model HUD weapons / Blender

I've been having a hard time understanding how to position my model in Blender to get it to show up correctly as a HUD weapon.

In a last ditch effort I took the plasma gun model from DS-Models.pk3, exported it from the pk3, imported the md2 into blender, and exported to md3 without moving it, unfortunately not even this seemed to work, it doesn't show up on screen in GzDoom or Zandronum. Is there some sort of translation / scaling that's happening during export?

If I assign the model to a decorative actor, it works as expected, so the model and skin are ok.

See example:

I tried exporting this with Blender 2.49b.

Thanks

Try rotating the model by 90-270 degrees. MD2 and MD3 seems to have different 0 rotations. (Or GZDoom just renders them with different 0 rotations).
