I gotta say, after thoroughly messing around with voxels, I wouldn't hold my breath, they simply aren't useful on a large scale without increasing lag due to a lack of hardware acceleration and there's no use replacing monsters either since they move on a fixed eight way path and lack interpolation, which limits useful voxel models mostly to the player, scenery and items. furthermore voxels have a tendency to warp in perspective, I find that voxels are actually less visible than sprites at distances. it'd be quite a pain implementing it in an engine that has both software and opengl as well
